Delta Cases Surpass 2500, Phnom Penh Nears 1000

Phnom Penh: As the Royal Government prepares for the reopening of both its educational and tourism sectors, the Delta variant of Covid-19 continues to spread, particularly in the capital. To date, 914 cases have been detected in the capital, with 24 discovered just this weekend.

Cambodia now has a total of 2,647 cases of the Delta variant of Covid-19. It is twice as contagious as the Alpha variant, which is responsible for Cambodia’s current second wave. Phnom Penh is the most-heavily affected province, followed by Banteay Meanchey with 526 cases. Oddar Meanchey has 245. Stung Treng has 119. The Delta variant has been detected in every province in the country, except for Kratie and Kep.

Government is racing against the Delta variant by providing booster shots. More than 600-thousand frontline workers and priority groups have already received their third dose. The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration started administering booster shots on Monday to city officials, their spouses and all residents over the age of 60 who were vaccinated with AstraZeneca four to six months ago. This stage of the capital’s booster shot campaign will run until 28 September.
